Deadpool 2 Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Think

Following some wildly successful screenings last week, reviews for Deadpool 2 have finally started to surface online. There has been quite a bit of anticipation about whether or not David Leitch's sequel could live up to Tim Miller's Deadpool, but according to CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell, it sounds like it has succeeded. Sean wrote:

Deadpool 2 is an outrageous, surprising, hysterical, emotional, vulgar, creative and uproarious summer blockbuster that fans of this genre -- and of comedy, in general -- will devour.

So, it looks like we can expect a lot of what made the original Deadpool work. Per Sean's review of the highly-anticipated sequel, there's plenty of laughter to go around, along with some great emotion and creativity. Sure, the first film as a massive success, but it seems that everyone involved in the X-Men franchise spinoff has made a point to not slow down the Ryan Reynolds smartass train.

The Total Film review of Deadpool 2 heaped similar praise on the film for its onslaught of comedy, with the added caveat that the film's plot doesn't entirely work. Nevertheless, it's worth remembering that this is a movie more about style and tone than it is about proper narrative structure. They wrote:

With a crowded posse of old/new characters to factor in, the plot risks looking almost as broken as Wade's arm after Cable has wrapped it round his neck 25 times. But, as with the original, Deadpool 2 thrives on tone over narrative. The merger of merciless comedy, extreme brutality, priceless blink/miss (look, just don't blink) cameos, intra-movie references and dubstep piss-takes (ask your dad) is tighter than Wade's grip on Colossus' ass.

Then there's Rolling Stone's take on Deadpool 2, which acknowledges just how much it throws at the wall, and how much of it surprisingly sticks. Rolling Stone wrote:

Deadpool 2 throws everything it has at you until you throw your arms up in happy surrender. Like its predecessor, the sequel is a grab-bag of humor, sorrow, sensation and silliness. None of it should work -- but it does like gangbusters, creating a sequel that will blow you away with nonstop action and hardcore haha. It's a summer movie that trips over itself in a mad-crazy dash to make us laugh till it hurts. That's what kind of fucksicle this is.

Of course, not every review of Deadpool 2 has been glowingly positive. In fact, while NPR noted that the film does have some solid jokes, it also pointed out that the film may be a bit too self-referential for its own good. NPR wrote:

There are, it is only fair to note, actual jokes in Deadpool 2 --- sincere, crafted, legitimately funny gags that are clearly the product of human thought and loving effort. There's ... not a lot of those, but they're there if you look, and should you happen across one, it will very likely delight you.

Now that we've gone through all of those reviews, it's time to decide for yourself if you want to see Deadpool 2. The film will debut this weekend on May 18, so check it out if you're a fan of the Merc with the Mouth and check out our 2018 movie premiere guide to see what other movies are on the horizon this year!
