The New Dark Phoenix Trailer Is Emotional And Devastating

If at first you dont succeed, try, try again. The X-Men film series is adopting this mantra with Dark Phoenix, as the last attempt to adapt the classic Dark Phoenix Saga storyline, 2006s X-Men: The Last Stand, was not well-received among fans. The first Dark Phoenix footage was released to the public back in September, but since the movie was delayed shortly thereafter, that gives 20th Century Fox extra time to promote the seventh main X-Men installment, and now you can watch a brand-new trailer for it below.

Set in 1992, nearly a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix sees Sophie Turners Jean Grey losing control of her Phoenix abilities after being hit by a solar flare while on a rescue mission with the X-Men in outer space. Her subsequent turn to darkness will drive a wedge in the mutant superhero team and those closely associated with them, as they have differing views on how to stop Jean before she becomes too powerful. Making matters worse, an alien shapeshifter, played by Jessica Chastain, is manipulating Jean for her own purposes.

For more than a year, weve been promised that Dark Phoenix would feature a major death, and surprisingly, this latest trailer seems to give it away: Mystique (just as I suspected). As the X-Men come find Jean in a town where shes caused some damaged, the shapeshifting mutant tries to calm her pupil down and bring her back to the light. But it isnt enough, and Jean telekinetically propels Mystique back. Theres a slim chance that this is just a classic case of trailer misdirection, but given that Jean says Mystique was her friend and we see the funeral later on, it appears that Raven Darkholmes story in this new X-Men timeline is over.

From there, we hear Jessica Chastains character goading Jean Grey into accepting her godlike powers while Professor X and the X-Men still loyal to him, and Magneto and his new group of allies, take different approaches to dealing with Jeans corruption. Naturally this results in blows and destruction, but at the end of the Dark Phoenix trailer, we see many of the characters imprisoned in a train with their powers dampened and armed soldiers keeping a close eye on them. Does this mean that William Stryker is back in town? However the mutants ended up in this situation, they wont be there for long, because Jean has arrived to rip the train off its tracks into the air.

While not officially confirmed yet, Dark Phoenix is looking to be the last of the X-Men movies of the Fox era before these characters are brought to Disney and almost certainly incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So Dark Phoenix needs to end this film series with a bang, and in terms of emotional upheaval and general pandemonium, it looks like the movie will not be lacking. Whether or not it does a better job of adapting Dark Phoenix remains to be seen, but at the very least, this looks to be the most devastating cinematic X-Men story yet.

How Godzilla: King Of Monsters Is Different Than Other Movies In The Franchise

After traveling back to 1973 to tell King Kongs take in Kong: Skull Island, the MonsterVerse is jumping back to the present day this summer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Due to the events of 2014s Godzilla, the public now aware of the Titans existence, and King of the Monsters will see more of these giant beasts awakening to wreak havoc on the world. But monsters are just one half of the equation in these kaiju movies. There are also the human players directly involved, and according to King of the Monsters star Vera Farmiga, a big way this sequel distinguishes itself from its predecessors is that it places a mother/daughter relationship front and center. In Farmigas words:

The previous Godzilla really focused on the relationship of a father and a son. At the heart of our film is this relationship between a mother and daughter.

Obviously the main draw of these types of movies is to see monsters battling one another, but the human stories also help keep the narrative grounded, so to speak. In Godzilla, the relationship between Aaron Taylor-Johnsons Ford Brody and his father Joe, played by Bryan Cranston, was explored during the first half of the movie, and for the sequel, we get to see Vera Farmigas Dr. Emma Russell interacting with her daughter Madison, played by Millie Bobby Brown. Emmas ex-husband and Madisons father, Kyle Chandlers Dr. Mark Russell, will also appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but as Farmiga told Syfy Wire, its Emma and Madisons relationship will get a lot of attention.

Godzilla didnt have much time to focus on Ford and Joe Brodys dynamic since Joe died after the awakening of the first MUTO, but it doesnt look like Godzilla: King of the Monsters will repeat that formula. The sequel sees Emma and Madison Russell being kidnapped by a mysterious organization, presumably due to Emmas work on communicating with and possibly controlling the Titans. Strangely, though, the first King of the Monsters trailer framed Emma as a seemingly willing participant in whatever this group has planned, and both Madison and Mark expressing disappointment and disgust at her actions, although admittedly, it could just look that way thanks to how the preview was edited.

Either way, Emma and Madison will be among the main human characters getting the spotlight in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and since the previous MonsterVerse movies, let alone most monsters movies, dont highlighted mother/daughter relationships, this makes for a nice change of pace. That said, while both Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler are confirmed to appear in Godzilla vs. Kong, Vera Farmiga has not been announced as part of that cast. Its possible that Farmigas involvement either hasnt been cemented or shell have a smaller role in the fourth MonsterVerse entry, but perhaps, just like how Ford Brody lost his father, Madison will lose her mother during King of the Monsters. Thatd be tragic, but in the MonsterVerse, tragedy comes in large supply.

James Wan Clarifies How Much Practical And Visual Effects Are Used In Aquaman

Digital effects have come a long way in recent years, and filmmakers can do quite a lot in post-production. That said, for many fans and industry insiders, there's still no complete substitute for old-fashioned practical effects. That debate is something that has popped up through the development of Aquaman, and it turns out that director James Wan is embracing the best of both worlds by augmenting practical makeup and costuming with some CGI wizardry. Explaining the process on social media, The Conjuring director wrote:

So, like many entries in the DCEU canon (and the superhero genre in general), Aquaman will feature heavy use of CGI to create the characters in the world. However, there's more than one way to skin a cat, and it seems that Wan and his team are not solely relying on computers to create the undersea realm of Atlantis. With that in mind, the film will also incorporate practical makeup effects to create the look and feel of the beings who inhabit that world, with computers creating room to enhance the makeup designs and environments.

James Wan's post about the blending of practical effects with computer-generated visual effects is only the latest in a series of updates that we have received about how the undersea landscape of Aquaman will come together when all is said and done. Much has already been said about the sheer amount of groundbreaking tech that the movie is using, but it looks like there's still an awareness that certain practical visual elements still work better than going purely digital.

All of this comes together to remind us that Aquaman is arguably unlike anything that we have seen from the DCEU before. Even though we got brief glimpses of Atlantis during the events of Justice League, everything that we have heard about Aquaman seems to suggest that the movie is going to give us a very alien world at the bottom of the ocean as Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry embarks on his first-ever solo adventure. Exact plot details remain under wraps, but with the promise of impressive effects, badass villains like Black Manta and Ocean Master, and Atlantean soldiers riding sharks, I think it's safe to say that we're incredibly excited to see what Aquaman has in store.

James Wan's Aquaman will premiere in theaters later this year on December 21, but if you are looking for a first-look at some of the blendings of practical and CGI effects, then make sure to keep an eye out for the first official Aquaman trailer this coming weekend when DC takes the stage at San Diego Comic-Con.
