Why Westworlds Evan Rachel Wood Turned Down A Role In Mean Girls

Just because a comedy is received well critically and commercially during its initial release doesn't necessarily mean it will remain popular as the years pass. Mean Girls, though, needn't worry about that, because 14 years after the Lindsay Lohan-led teen comedy dropped in theaters, it continues to be quoted and remembered fondly by many, to the point that it even has its own day. That said, had things gone differently, we could have seen Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood as one of the Mean Girls leads, and the only reason she turned down the movie was because it was too similar to another project she had lined up. When asked if it was true that she auditioned for Mean Girls, Wood responded:

It's even worse, I turned it down. There's a good reason. The only reason was because I was already supposed to do a film called Pretty Persuasion that was set in a high school, that was very Heathers-esque and it was very similar. I was already doing that, so I was like 'I can't.'

Evan Rachel Wood set the record straight during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and in hindsight, I would imagine that she's wishes she would have taken the Mean Girls role. While Mean Girls opened wide to the public in 2004, earned many positive reviews and made $129 million off a $17 million budget, Pretty Persuasion, which came out in 2005, opened in select theaters was was met with mostly negative reception. I can understand Wood at the time not wanting to star in two high school-set movies at the time, since there's no way should could have predicted that Mean Girls would be so successful. Alas, things didn't work out that way, but Wood is still interested in working with Tina Fey, who wrote the screenplay, which was based off the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Provided that Fey's next project isn't about a "robot uprising," Wood is all in on a collaboration.

While she didn't end up appearing in Mean Girls, Evan Rachel Wood has still built a solid acting resume. In the years after Mean Girls and Pretty Persuasion, she appeared in projects like Running with Scissors, Across the Universe, The Wrestler and True Blood. She can currently be seen playing Dolores Abernathy in HBO's Westworld. As for the Mean Girls, while a direct sequel starring Lindsay Logan, Rachel McAdams and the rest of the main cast never happened, Mean Girls 2 was released on ABC Family in 2011, and it starred an all-new cast with the exception of Tim Meadows, who reprised Principal Ron Duvall. A Mean Girls musical also just opened on Broadway, and a couple years back, a spinoff titled Mean Moms entered development, but as of late 2015, it's been stalled.

Tomb Raider Is Doing Way Better Internationally

The latest attempt to jump-start the video game movie renaissance is Tomb Raider, which hit theaters this weekend. Despite a valiant effort, the film still came up short at the box office, coming in second place to the Black Panther juggernaut. Tomb Raider made $23.5 million domestically in its opening weekend, but that doesn't tell the whole story. The ever more important foreign box office can play a huge role in a film's success or failure, and Tomb Raider is doing quite well internationally, raking in $102.5 million in its opening frame.

According to Box Office Mojo, the gritty reboot of gaming's most recognizable heroine currently sits at $126 million worldwide after its first weekend in release. The domestic haul was about in line with pre-release expectations, but Black Panther continues to reign supreme with incredible staying power, thus denying Tomb Raider the opportunity to slap the '#1 Movie in America' tag on post-release TV spots. Regardless, America is only part of the overall equation and although foreign markets aren't always as profitable as domestic ones, $102.5 million doesn't seem like a bad start for Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider did especially well in China, taking in $41.1 million on 15,500 screens according to Variety. Roar Uthaug's reboot accounted for nearly 50% of the box office among the top five films in that country. Even more impressive is how its opening weekend performance in China compares to two other worldwide smashes, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Wonder Woman, which earned $39.2 million and $37.6 million respectively when they opened there. Jumanji wound up making $77.9 million overall in China while Wonder Woman took in $90.4 million. If Tomb Raider has a similar final tally in China, it would go a long way towards putting this movie in the black.

While far from an indie flick, as a blockbuster, Tomb Raider had a pretty modest production budget of $94 million. Its domestic showing wasn't even enough to win its opening weekend, but this strong foreign start for Tomb Raider is at least a positive sign for those hoping for more of Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft. The film didn't fare great with critics and currently sits at a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, Tomb Raider's 50% is still enough for it to take the throne as the best reviewed video game movie. Not exactly the highest bar to clear, but its a step in the right direction and shows that there are positives to be taken from this reboot. For those who prefer their video game characters in their original medium, a new Lara Croft video game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was just announced for release later this year.

Does Aquaman Feature A Lot Of Improv? Here's What Jason Momoa Says

Superhero films aren't generally the types of projects most of us think about in relation to improv. In fact, it's often comedy flicks that are later released with gag reels and outtakes that are thought of in relation to improvisational moments. Yet, Aquaman apparently had quite a bit of improvisation, at least according to lead actor Jason Momoa.

We did a lot of improv. There were just moments where [director] James [Wan] was like, 'Alright we got it.' He let me be free and then play around and just do little things that felt right. So yeah there's definitely a lot, there's more of me in this character than anything I've ever played.

So yes, Jason Momoa was able to try things out and play around on the set of the movie, which reportedly cost $200 million to make. That's plenty of takes to find a cut that works, although I'm guess most of that budget went into CGI and making the movie look pretty spectacular.

Still, what's most intriguing to me about Jason Momoa's comment to Fox News is that he really seems to feel he was able to put more of himself into Arthur Curry than other characters he has portrayed on the big and small screen.

Of course, when you are known for playing a heathenish Khal, an axe-throwing fur trader and an alien from the Pegasus Galaxy, I suppose it's easy for a superhero who's also a normal dude to stand out as the role that's most like you. Superheroes, they're just like us.

Aquaman won't be the first movie superhero movie with improvisation, of course. We've heard that one of Avengers: Infinity War's biggest moments, the moment where Tom Holland felt himself fading into dust, was largely improvised. Robert Downey Jr. is also fairly notable for his improvisation on superhero movies.

Previously, Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok was also noted for its use of improvisation, especially in regards to the movie's humor and tone. Waititi has previously said 80% of that movie was improvised; I'm guessing Aquaman's number would be a little lower.

Venom also had a notably improvised moment in which Tom Hardy jumped into a lobster tank. So improvisation in superhero flicks happens, it's just not the rule.

A lot of DC movies have had a fairly dark tone, so it's really just nice to hear that the Aquaman cast had fun with the movie on set. Reviews for the flick have already started coming out, and for the most part people seem to think the movie goes for a lot, even if it doesn't hit every note perfectly. Hopefully it hits the improv notes well.

How bad at secret-keeping do you have to be not to get a complete script to the film youre shooting? Apparently, the answer is Tom Holland, as the Avengers: Endgame actor was never given an entire copy of the script to this months mega-blockbuster event. While that may sound like an exercise in overkill, lets recap some of the big spoilers that Holland dropped to get this level of notoriety.

In the most notable instances of spoiling the MCU for the masses, weve seen Tom Holland tell an audience about to watch Avengers: Infinity War that he was alive, in a joking reference to the fact that Spider-Man literally bit the dust in that very film. Not to mention, there was that time that he alluded to the potential Quantum Realm fix in Avengers: Endgame long before any of those cool new space suits came into play. And if you needed any other basis for just how many secrets could have slipped out in addition to those that Holland already put into the world, lets not forget that theres a montage of Benedict Cumberbatch being a pretty good goal-keeper when paired with Spider-Man: Far From Homes rather talkative star.

With all of those secrets scattered like Avenger dust to the wind, its apparently came to Joe and Anthony Russo having to withhold the whole script to Avengers: Endgame. And we only know this because in a recent interview, Joe himself admitted it as follows:

Yeah, Tom Holland does not get the script. Tom Holland gets his lines and thats it. He doesnt even know who hes acting opposite of. Well just, we use like very vague terms to describe to him what is happening in the scene, because he has a very difficult time keeping his mouth shut.

The fact that we have a whole list of times Tom Holland spoiled the MCU for fans says something about his eager, but kind-hearted tongue when it comes to the adventures of The Avengers. So this information straight from ComicBook.com sounds pretty accurate. Which has us wondering, did Mark Ruffalo get a copy of the script for Avengers: Endgame?

If Tom Holland isnt trusted with an entire script, than surely Ruffalo's done enough to get himself exiled into spoiler corner. Between his Livestream incident during the Thor: Ragnarok premiere, and his own gaffes involving Avengers: Endgame, its gotten so bad that even Don Cheadle has brought attention to it. And by bring attention to, we mean may or may not be joking about not wanting to do press with him. How does that effect lunch breaks on the set?

With Avengers: Endgame only a mere couple of weeks away, it wont be long before Tom Holland is let off the hook for the time being. Its a pretty big event, and since he hasnt had to memorize an entire scripts worth of information, he probably cant tell us about his big team up with The Hulk for the third act save. That is, if thats what happens in this next Avengers film, as were just kidding, and do not want Mr. Holland to take our word as gospel truth in any way, shape, or form.

Avengers: Endgame heads to theaters on April 26, with Spider-Man: Far From Home hitting theaters on July 3.
