Hayley Atwell Speaks About The Possibility Of Peggy Carter Returning To The MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a sweeping, interconnected world, which means characters can come and go freely. One specific hero that we haven't seen in a few years is none other than Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter, who remains a fan favorite following her 2011 debut in Captain America: The First Avenger. That raises essential questions about whether or not the late Peggy (who died in Captain America: Civil War) could return at some point. In fact, when asked about the possibility of a return to the MCU as Peggy Carter, Atwell played coy and suggested it as a possibility. The actress said:

Because it's a genre-specific superhero piece, I'm sure anything could happen. It's such a huge world. I do think there's something in the completion of the fact that they're doing their back-to-back Avengers at the moment, which will complete an era, so I can't see how that would be. But that's what's remarkable about Marvel is they keep going. Each film tends to further what they're doing, so I wouldn't rule it out.

So while Hayley Atwell doesn't actually specify whether or not Peggy Carter will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, she does note that it's a possibility. Peggy has one of the longest tenures of any hero in the entire MCU (which was only briefly touched on in her short-lived ABC series), so there are decades of stories that the folks at Marvel could mine if they really want to. As Marvel pushes forward into the future and carves out new stories, it creates new opportunities to re-introduce Peggy.

Another thing worth acknowledging about Hayley Atwell's recent remarks to Parade is the fact that some upcoming movies could easily let Peggy Carter return. We know that Captain Marvel will take place in the 1990s, which means we could see Peggy's later years as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Beyond that, with the upcoming release of Ant-Man and The Wasp, it's also possible that Peggy could pop up in a flashback cameo appearance, not unlike how she showed up in the opening of the original Ant-Man.

Then, of course, there's also the fact that we may see Peggy show up during the events of either Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers 4. There has been no official confirmation that she will appear when Thanos (Josh Brolin) comes to Earth in his quest for the Infinity Stones, but between the presence of the Time Stone, as well as the possibility of her showing up in another dream sequence (a la Avengers: Age of Ultron), there are plenty of possibilities worth exploring. After all, there's an argument to be made that you can't "complete an era" without bringing Peggy into the equation.

After all of this, we still don't know if Peggy Carter will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's clear that there's a vocal segment of the fanbase that wants to see it happen. The MCU will come together for its most prominent and most explosive outing yet later this month when Avengers: Infinity War debuts in theaters on April 27.

NARNIA. Man, it's still happenin' for Saturday Night Live. SNL gave us the "Lazy Sunday" digital short in honor of The Chronicles of Narnia, and just gave host James McAvoy a sketch dedicated to the unexpected appeal of Mr. Tumnus.

James McAvoy played the faun in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe back in 2005. Now that nearly 14 years have gone by, some of the women who saw that movie as adolescents are now adults who still have a thing for Tumnus. SNL really saw those "lazy Hermione" women in the "Mr. Tumnus" sketch.

That hits a little too close to home for me, but well done. I'm half-proud, half-ashamed to be a lazy Hermione type.

As you can see, first Cecily Strong's character arrived at Mr. Tumnus' home in Narnia to fawn over the faun. But it was nothing new for him.

I see. I was your girlhood crush, correct? Let me guess, it was my non-threatening masculinity. I'm sorta jacked but still in a little bit of a British way, you know?

Then two of her friends, played by Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant, showed up and propositioned Mr. Tumnus, who was basically expecting it.

Don't be so surprised. You see, hundreds of your kind visit me every year. Because I suppose, in a way, I've become an unlikely sex symbol for a very specific sort of woman. Sort of a lazy Hermione, if you will. ... And to you, I am the perfect combination of man, animal, scarf, and flute music. I'm like Frodo but without the baggage and drama.

Kate McKinnon's character said she felt seen, and confirmed the "frizzy hair, no spells" nature of her lazy Hermione status. She also added this chestnut:

This might be too forward, but ... Mr. Tumnus, I want to put my thumb-nus in your bum-nus.

CLASSIC. Hermione Granger would never be that forward in Harry Potter, but maybe Narnia is the nastier cousin. In the end, when the ladies saw that Mr. Tumnus was gay, they weren't surprised. So they settled for the rebound of Neville Longbottom. It's all very realistic, in the strangest way.

Chronicles of Narnia is kind of making a comeback, with Netflix set to develop new TV shows and films based on the C.S. Lewis fantasy novels.

James McAvoy hosted the Saturday, January 26 episode to promote his film Glass, which is now in theaters and once again topped the box office in its second weekend. Transformers has become the butt of jokes in recent years, as the films have steadily lost the interest of more viewers with each release and proved that massive robot brawls can be boring when not handled properly. However, the franchise isn't going down without a fight, as the upcoming prequel, Bumblebee rolls out in theaters this December. The Transformers shake-up has Michael Bay out of the director's chair for the first time and Hailee Steinfeld as a teenage lead. The E.T.-inspired entry seeks to inject some heart into the franchise ,and it's catching the attention of none other-than Kevin Smith, who admitted the latest trailer had him a little misty-eyed. Take a look:

Based on his recent tweet, you can count Kevin Smith on board for the Transformer rebrand. The filmmaker made fun of Transformers back in 2006's Clerks II in a scene between Randal and Elias when the Michael Bay films were not yet on screen. The sequence has Elias explained to Randal how the cartoon show was a gift from God. Year later, the Clerks creator isn't joking about the franchise anymore, as he's stoked to see Bumblebee in a few months.

The film is directed by Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight, who has been the lead animator for Laika films since its inception. Considering the endearing, coming-of-age stories found in these stop-motion films such as Coraline, the possibility of Bumblebee being a bit of a tearjerker is a distinct possibility. The movie centers on teenaged girl Charlie Watson living in the late '80s. She finds a yellow VW Bug in a junkyard to fix up, which ends up being a younger Bumblebee. The pair form an unlikely friendship and team up when its revealed that the Decepticons are coming back for an item the Autobot stole that they want back.

After 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight signaled a series low for the franchise, Bumblebee seems to be making some distinctive decision in hopes of keeping the property afloat. After Shia LaBeouf and Mark Wahlberg starred alongside the Autobots in the past, Bumblebee is opting for its first female lead and focusing more on developing characters audiences will care about. The movie will be the sixth film in the Transformer franchise, which started on a high note as one of the biggest films of the year back in 2007.

Bumblebee will, however, be opening alongside two other highly-anticipated films, Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns, and it comes a little over a year after The Last Knight didn't impress many fans. With a fresh take on the series and movie fans such as Kevin Smith excited for the film, it might just do the trick. Bumblebee heads to theaters on December 21.
