Elizabeth Olsen Has An Awesome Idea For A Scarlet Witch Movie

Thus far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has built eight separate franchises around solo hero adventures, but thus far none of them have specifically focused on Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch. The character has appeared two times on the big screen -- originally in Joss Whedon's The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a second time in Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: Civil War -- but there does not yet exist a specific Scarlet Witch film. Of course, with many titles yet to be announced for Phase Four, there's always hope for the future... and Olsen today revealed her own awesome thoughts about the potential project:

Paul [Bettany] and I joke a lot about how we would love to do, like, a House of M spin-off - really domesticated, indie version of it. And I think that would be a lot of fun. That part of her story is the reason why I love this character so much.

Along with 20 of her co-stars, Elizabeth Olsen participated in a press conference during the Los Angeles junket for The Avengers: Infinity War this afternoon, and it was during the Jeff Goldblum-hosted proceedings that she was asked about a Scarlet Witch movie. While she clearly wasn't making any kind of big announcement about an in-development project, she made it clear that she has real ideas about what that film could be. Specifically, it would be a twist on the popular House of M story from Marvel Comics -- a crossover event that was published in 1995 and orchestrated by writer Brian Michael Bendis.

As we've recently discussed on the site, Scarlet Witch's gifts in the comics are slightly different than they are in the movies, as the hero on the page actually has the ability to change reality. She usually does this in minor ways, but House of M was a different story. She suffers a serious breakdown after losing her two children (kind of a long story), and when the Avengers and the X-Men question whether or not she needs to be killed because of her unstable powers, she winds up creating a completely different and idyllic reality -- one where mutants are the dominant species, and humans the minority. Fortunately, Hawkeye, Wolverine, and Cloak remember what things were like before the change, and set out to change things back.

In the House of M reality, every hero lives their most desired version of their own life, and this in part lets Scarlet Witch and Vision have a domesticated existence living with their children. It's seemingly this idea that Elizabeth Olsen would love to springboard from, and specifically make the movie more like an indie drama rather than an action-packed blockbuster.

Personally, I love the idea, in part because I am a big fan of seeing comic book adaptations try new things and different ideas (it's the only way the "genre" can really survive). Adding to Elizabeth Olsen's thought, it would be further be amazing if they could also incorporate elements from writer Tom King's recent Vision miniseries, as that book has an absolutely fantastic and dark twist on the concept of domesticity that would be perfect for exploration in feature format. The two stories could mesh very well, and it would be wonderful to see a fantastic "hard sci-fi" director like Alex Garland approach the material.

It is worth mentioning that there are a couple of obstacles here. For starters, one has to wonder if Marvel Studios even has the rights to adapt House Of M because it's such a mutant/X-Men-centric storyline (which would more likely put it in the hands of 20th Century Fox). This issue would be admittedly obliterated if the Disney/Fox deal ultimately goes through, but for right now it would probably prove an issue.

Secondly, there's the issue of time. There's only so many movies that can be released in one year (it's hard to imagine them going over three), and already they have a ton of different plates spinning. Because of these projects, not to mention the unknown events that occur in The Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, it's hard to know exactly when Marvel Studios might get around to making a Scarlet Witch movie.

A Glass Sequel? Let's Talk Out The Pros And Cons

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Glass. If you have not yet seen the film, read on at your own risk!

To be generous, M. Night Shyamalans Glass ends on a controversial note. Making a sharp left turn in the third act, the writer/director makes the call to not only kill all three of the main characters, but also introduce a secret society with a clandestine purpose involving superheroes. Acting as a conclusion to a trilogy, there is no question that the film brings an end to the story of David Dunn, the hero drowned in a shallow puddle by the group Ive dubbed the Black Clover Society, but at the same time the movie also inspires a complex debate: should this be the end of a franchise, or maybe the kick start of a new era that further explores the world?

The answer to this question is a complicated one regardless of how you feel about Glass but its a bit more difficult for those (like me) who were left feeling dissatisfied by where the new film leaves the story that began with Unbreakable back in 2000. From that perspective there arrives the first significant argument against the idea of continuation, which is that its not worth the risk to make a bad situation even worse.

M. Night Shyamalan had the chance to coalesce an exciting series with his follow-up to Split, but Glass being as shoddy as it is shouldnt be seen as motivation to give him another shot to fix it. Instead, one could make the argument that it instead just risks the legacy of the existing trilogy, which does still currently stand in a positive place from a pop culture perspective thanks to the strength of its first two chapters. In other words, it can very much been seen as a let sleeping dogs lie situation.

Considering that argument from a more optimistic point of view, however, even the most ardent critic of Glass will acknowledge that there are some interesting ideas that are left to explore in the film mostly because the existing movie doesnt do a great job exploring them itself. While not exactly explicit, there is strong suggestion from M. Night Shyamalan that there is a long history behind the Black Clover Society and the way in which they operate, and there is also left the very important question as to the full reasoning behind their existence.

Without having to jam everything into about 15 minutes of screen time, a sequel to Glass that isnt really a sequel to Glass could do a more in-depth look at the Black Clover Society and their purpose. Not only would this serve to potentially introduce even more real superheroes that exist in this particular world, with a variety of powers that go beyond super strength, but depending on the story it might even change the way we view the covert group, and in so doing perhaps change opinions on the 2019 film as well.

Then there is M. Night Shyamalans general future to think about. It took him a long time to regain the credibility that he lost with films like The Lady In The Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth, but he had a strong thing going with both The Visit and Split. There is a lot of hope that we will ultimately look back on Glass as a hiccup on a strong road to redemption but the way to get there may not be by having him continue with a franchise that is now on shaky ground. For both the sake of his career, and the future of interesting original movies being made in Hollywood, it might just be best for the Eastrail 177 features to stop here.

Thanks to a solid opening weekend, Glass is already a financial success, which is all the motivation that Hollywood typically needs to feed sequel plans, but whether or not there actually should be a future is a debate that should continue for a while. We didnt even know we were getting an Unbreakable follow-up until it arrives in theaters two years ago, so well just have to wait and see what happens and in what directions M. Night Shyamalan decides to go.





There is a lot of hope that we will ultimately look back on Glass as a hiccup on a strong road to redemption - but the way to get there may not be by having him continue with a franchise that is now on shaky ground. For both the sake of his career, and the future of interesting original movies being made in Hollywood, it might just be best

See What Wesley Snipes Blade Could Look Like In The MCU

Long before the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Blade franchise reigned as one of the few successful superhero movie series. Now, some have begun to wonder if Wesley Snipes could don the sunglasses and return to the half-vampire badass within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With that theory/rumor in mind, a new (and utterly badass) piece of fan art has just hit the web showing that possibility. Check it out, below!

Pretty awesome, right? That's what Wesley Snipes could look like if he returns to the Marvel world, and finds his version of Blade adapted into the MCU, and it's something that longtime fans of the character would likely love to see. From the blood to the eyes to the smirk, it's all classic Blade. If you are one of the many people who has wanted to see the sword-wielding badass make his way back to the big screen, then this should get you very intrigued.

Having said all of that, the possibility of Blade entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have to face some major hurdles if it ever wanted to become a reality. Chief among these concerns is the fact that a new film version of Blade (particularly one reminiscent of this bloody image) would likely need an R-rating to appease die-hard fans of the character. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never delved into R territory before (unless you count the harder-hitting Defenders content over on Netflix), so that could raise some issues with the process of bringing Blade to life in a way that makes sense and honors his legacy.

Of course, the biggest thing to wonder after seeing this image is whether or not we could see Blade enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well, Wesley Snipes remarked on those rumors recently and said that he had met with the folks at Marvel Studios about the possibility. Snipes explained:

All the main execs [at Marvel] and my team, we've been discussing for the past two years. Everyone's enthusiastic about it, everybody gets it. But they got a business to run and they gotta square the things that they gotta figure out before they can get to it, I guess. In the meantime, we got a business to run and our own slate of things to do.

So while that does not guarantee anything, it shows that there's at least a fraction of a possibility that Blade could find himself enveloped into the greater MCU fold at some point.
