Upcoming Fast and Furious Movies: List Of Titles And Release Dates

F. Gary Gray's The Fate Of The Furious' tenure at the box office was a rollicking success. Not only did it set the record for the highest-grossing opening of all time when it was released, but worldwide it made more than $1.23 billion. While that's still behind franchise-holder Furious 7's haul of $1.516 billion, Universal Pictures and the Fast And The Furious cast and filmmakers have still decided that there is still plenty of rev left in the engine.

The Fate Of The Furious has been described as the first in a new trilogy of films from the franchise, and Universal Pictures has already announced a spin-off film featuring two of the most beloved characters from the series as well. But, what do we know about the upcoming Fast And Furious movies? We here at CinemaBlend have built this feature to answer that question and as many as we can like it, offering a crash course on the upcoming list of titles and their release dates for the car racing/heist franchise. So, without further ado, here are the future features from The Fast And The Furious that have the near impossible task of trying to top the audacious efforts that have preceded them.

Hobbs And ShawWhile Vin Diesel was more than happy to share the revelation that two more Fast And Furious films would be coming in the ensuing years, rounding up the saga's total to 10 films, he's been much quieter about the proposed Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw spin-off, which will star Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. That's understandable, considering the reported tiff between Diesel and Johnson. Shortly after the release of The Fate Of The Furious, and following on from its record breaking opening, Universal and Johnson himself quickly teased that Hobbs and Shaw would get their own film. Fate Of The Furious actually did a sterling job of setting up their camaraderie, putting them in a number of scenes together, and Johnson and Statham were able to create a genuine buzz. There were even rumors that the film contained a deleted end credits scene that saw the duo finally going to have their long touted fight, only to then decide not to do so at the last minute, and then vow to work together instead. It was intended to launch the spin-off, but, even without that little tip of the hat, the potential blockbuster is still coming.Release Date: July 26, 2019

Fast & Furious 9The Fate Of The Furious actually set itself up rather nicely for a sequel. The family is reunited on a New York rooftop; the bad blood between Dom and Deckard Shaw seems to have been forgotten; and everyone is looking as though they're getting along famously. Letty doesn't have an issue with Dom having a child, and even Charlize Theron's Cipher is still on the loose. After she murdered Elsa Pataky's Elena right in front of Dom and their son, the posse will be intent, no doubt, in getting some revenge. But the good vibes between Deckard and Dom could really be put to the test with the return of Han. Despite the revelation at the end of Fast & Furious 6 that Deckard was responsible for Han's death in The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, he may actually be alive and well, as screenwriter Chris Morgan and producer Neal Moritz have confirmed that Sung Kang will reprise his role in the next installment. Or, of course, it's possible that he will just be used in flashbacks. Along with Han, the rest of the main cast has strongly suggested that they will return too (we'll have to wait and see what this means when it comes to more screen time for Helen Mirren).Release Date: April 10, 2019

Fast & Furious 10Since those involved in Fate Of The Furious have been pretty quick to reveal that this was the start of a trilogy, we can expect Fast & Furious 9 to end on a bit of a tease - and it should be an epic one, considering Fast & Furous 10 is lined up to conclude the main series in the franchise. Sadly, Chris Morgan has already insisted that this won't include a trip to space, which feels like a wasted opportunity. Hopefully he'll change his mind - but in the meantime we can only speculate about how both the ninth and tenth films will try to top their predecessors. After dragging a vault through Rio, crashing through two skyscrapers, and racing a submarine, it's going to be very tough. This will be further complicated by the fact that Dominic Toretto will undoubtedly be trying to balance his need for speed with fatherhood. The question is whether the film will decide to keep Brian Toretto as an infant. They could instead move a few years into the future and then show him on the hunt for revenge against Cipher alongside his old man. This would also give fans the opportunity for the film to depict Dom teaching his kid how to drive, a scene that we all would love to see. Don't forget that Mia and Brian's own son could be brought in too. What we do know is that Brian O'Conner almost certainly won't be seen again, as producer Neal Moritz previously insisted it would be too hard to see the character again after Paul Walker's death.Release Date: April 2, 2021

Theres been a lot of talk about the new characters coming to the Toy Story universe in recent months, particularly given big names like Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks and Tony Hale are attached. Among those characters is a little guy name Forky, who is created by Bonnie on her first day of school out of trash. The soon-to-be-enlightened trash is voiced by the aforementioned Tony Hale, who shared with CinemaBlend at a recent press day that figuring out how to voice Forky was actually fairly easy thanks to a cool Pixar trick.

After getting over the shock of being asked to appear in a Pixar movie, Tony Hale revealed the powers that be at Pixar actually used voice clips of other acting gigs, including Arrested Development and Veep, to share how the studio hoped the character would look and sound in the final product.

During an interview with CinemaBlend while in Orlando for a recent Toy Story 4 press day, Tony Hale shared with us the special way Pixar pitched Forky to him, also mentioning that it was an easy sell. The actor also told us that he was just overwhelmed to be invited to join the animated voice team on Toy Story 4, also noting that perhaps a spork was not what he had in mind initially, although it all seems to have worked out very well for both the actor and the Pixar creative team. He said:

Its the same reaction I have now, overwhelmed. Forky and I really share that. He asks, Why am I here? I ask, How did I get here? I dont know whats happening. But they brought me up to Pixar and showed me a picture of a spork and I was kind of like, OK thats not what I was thinking, but lets go with it. Pixar and their magic.

He later went on to say that he wasnt sure what he was expecting from the voice gig, but it definitely wasnt to see a spork animated on a screen with his own voice from Arrested Development emanating out of it. Yes, this is really how the pitch happened. Per Hale:

I say it wasnt what I was thinking but if Im honest I probably wasnt thinking at all because I was so astonished that I was even there. I dont really remember that first meeting. I remember talking through Forky and I also remember they took clips from Arrested Development and clips from Veep and put it in animated Forky just to kind of see how he would react. And I was like, I love that.

Bonnie had to fall in love with the spork, so the character had to be one the audience could fall in love with too, and first that meant selling Tony Hale on the role.

Looking into how Pixar pitched the idea to the actor, Id assume clips from Veep in particular might have been a little too outrageous to really fit into the goal for the G-rated Pixar movie, but the sentiment is still pretty cool, particularly given that some of Tony Hales other characters do share commonalities. Still, somehow I cant see Pixar using a clip of Forky asking Veeps Jonah if he looks like "a pimp," although a clip with Forky noting I was made to understand that there would be grilled cheese sandwiches here or Im a monster! could definitely be more on brand for the little spork.

In fact, the actor also spoke out about how Forky tends to follow a through line a lot of his other characters have exhibited over the years: theyre nervous.

Hes just, he has no flexibility like me, we have that in common. But hes just incredibly simple and gullible and kind of nervousthat tends to be a through line in the characters Ive done.

Given the nature of characters like Buster Bluth and Gary Walsh, it makes a certain amount of sense those were the roles the Pixar team would have chosen when putting together footage in order to share the expectations for Forky in Toy Story 4.

Hearing thats how Pixar sold Tony Hale on the gig isnt shocking news if you know a lot of hot facts about Pixar, however. In fact, its a trick that Pixar has used for years in order to help actors to understand and voice their animated counterparts to their full potential.

Previously, weve heard from Toy Storys own Tom Hanks regarding how Pixar pitched him on the role of Woody so many years ago when the original movie was just coming together. Hanks has said the company used a sample of the animation mixed with his vocals from Turner and Hooch to get him on board for the role playing the animated cowboy toy. It makes me wonder what Christina Hendricks and other actors related to Toy Story 4 were also able to see while being pitched.

It may be a repeat trick, but its sure an effective one.

Granted, it's not a quick process to go from animated AD clips to the big screen. Various people related to the production also mentioned it took several years to go from script to finished product. Now, we're nearing the finish line, however. In fact, you can hear Tony Hale as new character Forky in the Toy Story 4 trailer right now, or catch the fully charming movie (at least per the critics!) when it hits theaters on June 21st although there doesnt look to be a Pixar short this time around, which would be a first for Pixar since 1995.

Earlier this year, John Krasinski surprised audiences with A Quiet Place, a stunning new horror-thriller that introduced shocking rules for survival in a believable environment: Don't make any noise, or else creatures from space will attack and devour you. But it was actually Krasinski and his creative team that was most surprised, because modern audiences played along with their concept and kept the theatrical experience relatively quiet as well -- turning A Quiet Place into a rare movie-going treat that was improved when watching it with a silent crowd.

Oscar-winning sound editors Ethan van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl said they thought long and hard about crowd noise and its impact on A Quiet Place, and actually admitted to CinemaBlend that they tweaked the film's design after seeing how it played to audiences at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, where Krasinski's movie world premiered. The duo told us:

Erik Aadahl: What we wound up doing after the very first SXSW screening of the film -- which was the first time audiences saw it -- we actually readjusted reel one of the movie a little bit. Where... so, we started the film actually at a more traditional sound level, and then eased the audience in over a few minutes into the quiet. And that gave everyone's ears a chance to re-tune to kind of more... [of] a different experience that people might not have been used to. So we gave theatrical audiences a little bit of a chance to learn the rules, and start to put their popcorn away [laughs] and stop talking or taking texts. And that was kind of fun to, you know -- we checked it out with audiences, and it was kind of neat to see the whole audience start to learn the rules of this film. And in a way, it made them active participants with the characters in the film, which is really an exciting participatory experience for us to see.Ethan van der Ryn: And if you think about it, like, how often does a large group of people have the chance to all be together, you know, basically focused on the same thing, and being quiet, you know, together in order to really understand what's going on. And in many ways I think it was a very rare experience for a lot of people.

These tweaks, happening after the fact, had to be crucial to A Quiet Place working as well as it did. Which made the SXSW premiere of the movie that much more valuable, because the team was able to see how an audience would do under these unusual circumstances, and then tailor the film to meet the need. Erik Aadahl and Ethan van der Ryn spoke with CinemaBlend in Minnesota, where we visited the Orfield Lab, dubbed "The Quietest Place on Earth." Over the course of his career, Spike Lee has been an experimental filmmaker -- never limiting himself in terms of tone, genre, or medium. He's directed not only numerous comedies and dramas, but also multiple documentaries, shorts, concert films, stand-up specials, Broadway plays, and more. There's very little that he hasn't tried, but there is one particular genre he has a lot of interest in, as I recently learned:

Oh yeah. I'm going to do a musical one day, for sure. I mean, there are many musical elements in my films already, but this one I want to do straight out singing and dancing, beginning-to-end high-stepping, wailing musical.

Spike Lee is having an awesome 2018 thanks to the release of the critically-acclaimed BlacKkKlansman, and with the new film now arriving on home video I had the immense pleasure of hopping on the phone with him earlier this month. At the very end of my interview I made a note of the fact that he has dabbled in all areas of directing/filmmaking, and asked if there was any other kind of project that he would love to try. It was with zero hesitation that he brought up his ambition to make a musical -- and it sounds like what he has in mind would be no rinky-dink affair.

As noted by Spike Lee, many of his movies he has already made have powerful and impactful soundtracks, concert scenes, and even some dance sequences -- looking specifically at titles like School Daze and Chi-Raq -- but it sounds like Lee's ambitions in this case go beyond what we've already seen from the director. It sounds like he wants characters breaking from dramatic situations by busting out into song and joining friends in giant choreographed dance routines totally removed from reality. And is there anyone out there who doesn't want to see him try that?

What makes Spike Lee's comments especially interesting is the fact that the movie industry is actually in the midst of a notable boom for this genre, with audiences responding in a big way to films with a major music component. The past three years have seen three big titles in this category hit theaters - Michael Gracey's The Greatest Showman, Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born, and Bryan Singer's Bohemian Rhapsody -- and they've all been massive box office hits. Lee has some real heat right now, with BlacKkKlansman standing as the second biggest hit of his career, and doing a full-blown musical might be the perfect way to capitalize.

But what exactly would the musical be? It's really impossible to say. Fitting in with the picture painted of Spike Lee above, the new project could be an original creation of Lee's own imagination, or it could just as easily be an adaptation of a story he's always been curious about. We'll just have to wait and see what awaits us in this arena.
