John Wick: Chapter 4 Just Got Some Major Opening Weekend Competition

After only a week at the box office, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum has already surpassed the earnings of the first films entire theatrical run. It was also the first film to dethrone Avengers: Endgame for the #1 weekend rank after almost a month. So it wasnt a huge surprise when it was announced Keanu Reeves would soon be returning for a fourth chapter in 2021.

But John Wick 4 may now need to watch its back because Taika Waititis live-action Akira movie has just nabbed the same release date for May 21, 2021. The long-awaited manga adaptation helmed by the Thor: Ragnarok director could certainly be hefty competition for the assassin, considering how beloved Katsuhiro Otomos cyberpunk series is to fans.

Warner Bros announced the release date on Friday, per THR, mere days after pushing DC Super Pets away from that date to May 22, 2022. While Super Pets and John Wick 4 target two different audiences, but Akira runs over Wicks violent action elements, placing them in direct competition.

Taika Waititis upcoming project is a story set in post-apocalyptic Tokyo about a teenage boy named Tetsuo who obtains terrifying and dangerous psychic powers. His childhood friend Kaneda must rise up with his bike gang to stop his threats to the world. It was previously adapted into an anime film in 1988, which had a huge influence on the genres appeal to American culture.

Since Taika Waititi revitalized the Thor franchise with Ragnarok in 2017, and has since climbed up among Marvel fans favorites in the MCU (CinemaBlend readers ranked it #5), there will be high anticipation regarding this project. The director has said the film had a huge impact on his own life, but he will be drawing heavily from the source material for his version of Akira.

While many Hollywood manga adaptations have gained flack for white-washing their characters, Taika Waititi has said he will be aiming to hire Asian actors in the roles -- likely unknown untapped young talents. Marco Ramirez -- who has penned episodes for Sons of Anarchy, Daredevil, The Defenders, and The Twilight Zone reboot -- is reportedly writing the script, with Leonardo DiCaprio as a producer.

Taika Waititi has been attached to the project for two years, though hes been busy working on his dramady Jojo Rabbit, coming in October and on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Now with his schedule clearing up a bit, hell need to make room for Akira to get ready for its release two years from now.

Warner Bros has been trying to make a live-action Akira for over a decade, once with Garrett Hedlund attached to a version back in 2012 before it was dropped. Considering the film now has a release date and a promising director attached, the film looks to be moving swiftly forward toward that 2021 release date next to John Wick 4.

Blumhouse's Happy Death Day was something of a surprise horror hit, and so, like all successful horror movies, it's getting a sequel. More importantly, this one has the perfect title. While a follow-up seemed likely after the initial film's success and that sequel was confirmed several months ago, it is the recent revelation of the title which puts the icing on the birthday cake, as it's clear that the sequel will be just as offbeat as the original. The new movie will be called Happy Death Day 2U.

While I'm not sure how I feel about the use of 'U' rather than "You" in the title, beyond that, it's really the only right move the sequel could have made. I saw more than one person make the joke on social media following the first Happy Death Day that the sequel needed to be called some variation on this, and then it happened, because you just can't ignore something as obvious as this when the first movie's title was already a play on the Happy Birthday phrase.

The original film starred Jessica Rothe as college student Tree, who lives through her birthday, only to end up murdered by the end of it. However, instead of dying, Tree then proceeds to relive her birthday/death day over and over again, leading her to attempt to solve the mystery of her killer and potentially save her own life. It's basically the slasher movie version of Groundhog Day. According to Variety, Rothe will return to lead the sequel as well, so the movie will be a direct sequel, rather than being a brand new story that simply follows the premise laid out in the first film. Christopher London who wrote and directed the first movie will also be back in both roles for the sequel.

The original Happy Death Day grossed $122 million around the world and while that would be a somewhat disappointing number for your average studio tentpole, for the modest Blumhouse horror movie, with a budget in the neighborhood of $5 million, it was a massive hit. While the sequel will likely get a slight bump in the budget, expect the sequel to not stray too far away from what made the original film work, and since the original film didn't need $100 million to work, that won't happen.

The exact plot of Happy Death Day 2U hasn't been revealed but indications have been that the sequel will pick up where the first movie left off, with little or no time having passed since the point where the original film ended. Beyond that, comparisons have been made to the Back to the Future movies, so who knows what that means. It will be interesting to see what new twists can be put on the concept to make the sequel as original as the first film was.

In an absolutely shocking move, Disney yesterday rehired James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn was fired from his position last year after poor-taste decade-old social media posts resurfaced. Fans, filmmakers, and actors voiced their displeasure over the decision at the time. Now, Gunn is back in the director's chair, but this does raise some questions about when Vol. 3 will hit theaters.

By our calculations, it's possible that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won't arrive in theaters until 2023, due to James Gunn's new commitment to DC and The Suicide Squad.

After James Gunn was let go by Disney, it wasn't that long until Warner Bros. scooped him up to write and direct the Suicide Squad reboot. It was a big story at the time that one of Marvel's most prominent directors made the jump to DC. Even though Gunn is back with Marvel, his Suicide Squad movie is reportedly still on, and Marvel is willing to wait for Gunn to wrap that project to finally move forward with Vol. 3.

The Suicide Squad is currently expected to begin filming this fall with a release date set for August 2021. That means Gunn probably won't be able to start production for Vol. 3 until either late 2021 or early 2022. Marvel's normal production schedule usually takes about one year, so that puts Vol. 3 in theaters by 2023 -- six years after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Thankfully, there may already be some shortcuts Vol. 3 can take. James Gunn had already finished the script before he was fired. There are no doubt some rewrites and tweaks still left to be done, but at least there's a complete draft of the screenplay.

Of course, this is all assuming that The Suicide Squad keeps its release date and shooting schedule. Whether or not that gets pushed backward or forward really impacts what Vol. 3 will do and how much focus James Gunn can devote to it.

As of now, Marvel doesn't have any films slated to release in 2023. It has three films slated for 2022, but it's unclear which of its in-development projects will be attached to the dates. The other films that Marvel has in the pipeline are Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, and the inevitable but still unannounced Captain Marvel 2. A movie like Guardians 3 will likely need that prime May real estate, so we will have to wait and see how Marvel's schedule shakes out.

There used to be a big question mark on Guardians 3, but now it's just a little bit smaller as fans can relax knowing the franchise is back in James Gunn's hands. We'll be paying close attention to how this all shakes out so stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated.
