Jake Gyllenhaal Convinced Jamie Lee Curtis To Do The New Halloween

Jake Gyllenhaal Convinced Jamie Lee Curtis To Do The New Halloween

Horror fans are in for a treat later this year when Blumhouse's Halloween reboot finally hits theaters forty years after the debut of John Carpenter's original slasher flick. There's a lot of anticipation to see what director David Gordon Green can bring to the table, as he's currently riding high off of the critical acclaim enjoyed by his Boston Marathon bombing movie, Stronger, from last year. That film generated quite a bit of buzz for the filmmaker, and it turns out that Stronger star Jake Gyllenhaal actually was the one who convinced Jamie Lee Curtis to return to the Halloween franchise following his collaboration with Green.

So, it seems that Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Lee Curtis are more connected than some of us may have previously realized. The two are close family friends, and Curtis even refers to him as her "unofficial godson." Given that close relationship, Variety reports that it was the Donnie Darko star who convinced Curtis to sign on for the Halloween reboot because he had such a good time working with David Gordon Green on Stronger, even reportedly going so far as to rank it as one of the top experiences of his career.

Once Jamie Lee Curtis got a chance to meet David Gordon Green, she fell back into a nice rhythm reminiscent of the one experienced when she worked on the original Halloween. In fact, the actress has likened David Gordon Green's style to that of John Carpenter, noting his calm and relaxed approach to filmmaking. After all, this is the guy responsible for Pineapple Express, so it makes sense to know that he has a lighter side when Michael Myers isn't butchering teenagers on the spookiest night of the year.

With Jake Gyllenhaal having convinced them to work together, now it's a matter of waiting to see what David Gordon Green and Jamie Lee Curtis can do. The first trailer for the Halloween reboot dropped last week and took the internet by storm, and it looks like the reboot will honor the first film in a major way, as it sets up a dark showdown between a scrappy and capable Laurie Strode (who has been preparing for this fight) and a perpetually-enigmatic Boogeyman with an affinity for white masks and kitchen knives.

Halloween fans will get a chance to see if Jamie Lee Curtis had an experience similar to the one enjoyed by Jake Gyllenhaal on Stronger later this year when Blumhouse's Halloween debuts in theaters on October 19. Make sure to check out the highly-anticipated horror film when it premieres, and don't forget to head over to our 2018 movie premiere guide to check out all of the other films on the horizon for later this year.

Why Peyton Reed Didn't Want Ant-Man And The Wasp In Infinity War

Why Peyton Reed Didn't Want Ant-Man And The Wasp In Infinity War

Earlier this summer, just about every major Marvel character graced the screen in Avengers: Infinity War, which boasted the biggest cast of any MCU film. However, there were some tiny exclusions. Ant-Man and the Wasp were nowhere to be seen in Infinity War and while people didn't get as riled up about it as they did Hawkeye, there were still plenty who were upset that the duo was missing out. Peyton Reed, director of Ant-Man and the Wasp, was not one of those people, and recently stated that they were left out so that their own movie could stand alone.

Yeah, I mean, listen, I have jealousy issues. Whenever these heroes pop up in movies I'm not involved in I get jealous. It was important to have this movie be a stand-alone thing -- its own beginning, middle, and end -- to be different, tonally, than, obviously, Infinity War. For me, it was really about taking what we had done in the first movie and forwarding those characters in ways that were interesting and hopefully unexpected. And obviously most excited about introducing Wasp.

Even if you were bummed that Ant-Man and the Wasp sat out Infinity War, it's not like you had to wait long to see them in action. Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters in less than a week, and early reactions to the movie are labeling it as a light, fun romp that will leave a smile on your face. That's almost the opposite of Infinity War, which might have left you crying in a corner on the movie theater. It'd be pretty hard for Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne to go from fighting Thanos right into their superhero comedy, which factored into the decision to leave them out in the first place.

In an interview with IGN, Peyton Reed revealed that the shrinking duo wasn't in the Avengers movie so that Ant-Man and the Wasp could be a standalone adventure. The first Ant-Man was fairly standalone from the rest of the MCU, which helped make the movie more refreshing for how low stakes it was. The sequel is following suit and it's part of the charm of this particular franchise. You can always count on having a good time with Ant-Man!

Plus, the sequel had the job of introducing the Wasp to the masses. Doing so in Infinity War likely wouldn't have done the character much justice and she'll get plenty more time to shine in her own movie. Early on in development for Captain America: Civil War, the Wasp was supposed to be involved, but she was cut from the movie for that exact same reason as her exclusion from Infinity War.

You'll finally be able to see both of the characters in Ant-Man and the Wasp, which hits theaters on July 6.

He definitely wanted to do that in Ant-Man and the Wasp, as he admits he didn't want to reveal Giant Man in Civil War. In fact, if it had been up to him, he would have kept Ant-Man inside his own Universe. In an interview for Moviefone, Peyton Reed explains his perspective on Ant-Man, and why Scott Lang doesn't really fit a superhero ensemble.

How Walt Disney Animation Aims To Balance Original Movies And Sequels Going Forward

How Walt Disney Animation Aims To Balance Original Movies And Sequels Going Forward

This is a big week for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Not only is Ralph Breaks The Internet now available for Digital Download, but the first trailer for the upcoming Frozen 2 was released earlier today. These are obviously two very different titles released by the same company, but one big thing they share in common is that they are sequels. After all, Walt Disney Animation is a studio definitely not known for theatrically-released follow-ups, and now were getting two of them in a row.

Naturally, this raises an important question: how will sequels be approached moving forward? The library of titles in this arena used to be limited to Rescuers Down Under and Fantasia 2000, but that was before our current Hollywood era of franchise and IP dominance. It puts Walt Disney Animation in an interesting position, and one that I got the chance to recently discuss with two members of Disneys Story Trust: Ralph Breaks The Internet directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston.

I sat down with the filmmakers earlier this month during the home video press day for their new movie, and it was at the end of the interview that I raised the discussion about the companys sequel philosophy. In responding to my question, they fully acknowledged the interesting position in which Disney currently finds itself when it comes to demands from the audience. Said Rich Moore,

People want sequels. They want to see their favorite characters again a story that they love - and it's going to be tough! We have Frozen 2 coming, and people want to see Anna and Elsa on the big screen again, but I don't think that we ever want to get into a practice where we're just making sequels. We really doubled down on, 'We need to create new stories.' We can't just get into this rut of just revisiting something that we did five years ago, and giving another chapter of that.

Walt Disney Animation isnt exactly going sequel overboard right now (per the old saying, two doesnt make a pattern), but they have released some massive hits in recent years with worlds fans would be eager to revisit including Zootopia and Big Hero 6. Furthermore, we dont exactly know a great deal about their upcoming slate right now. Frozen 2, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and set to be released on November 22nd, is the only officially announced Walt Disney Animation project that we currently know about. And while well surely hear about a lot more at this summers D23 Expo, one has to wonder how many of the earmarked release dates in the next three years will feature familiar characters.

This isnt a specific question that Disney is ready to answer yet, but Rich Moore was definitely happy to share how he feels all sequels need to be developed at Walt Disney Animation noting his experience with Ralph Breaks The Internet as a prime example. Basically, the decision to make any kind of follow-up should not be motivated by box office earnings, but instead via desire and interest on behalf of the original filmmakers. Moore explained,

Really it was the love of the characters that we had for Ralph and Vanellope, and just the team that made the movie that made us go back to it. No one said to us, 'We want you to make another Ralph movie.' It came from us. So if we can keep it honest like that, that no one is saying make sequels, that it comes from the filmmakers, and we're making just as much original content here, then I think we're okay. Then it's healthy.

Taking a wider view, the longevity of the film industry as a whole is dependent on original and diverse storytelling that shows audiences things theyve never seen before, and within that realm Phil Johnston acknowledged the important role Walt Disney Animation serves. While every studio constantly struggles to get audiences to engage with the unfamiliar, WDAS is one of the few companies that regularly makes it work, and that success creates a certain responsibility.

If Walt Disney Animation is one of the few names in the game that can get people to take their medicine in the form of original characters and storytelling (oh the horror), then thats something that they need to embrace. Said Johnston,

The beauty to me about animation at our studio is that it's really one of the last places in big budget Hollywood filmmaking where original ideas can thrive and grow and become their own thing. Most of what exists now is existing brands or IP that lives in the world. The fact that we created Ralph and Vanellope those years ago, and we have revisited them, but I love that they live in the world and they didn't live in the world 10 years ago, and same with Nick and Judy in Zootopia.

Continuing, Phil Johnston further explained that there is also still something incredible about leaving a particular stamp on the world as a result of your own creativity:

I love that you can still make stuff up out of your imagination, and it can become a fun, successful movie whether it's a brand or a franchise or not. I don't know, I'm just proud that this place is making stuff that's original, and coming from the hearts and imaginations of the people who work here.

You can watch Rich Moore and Phil Johnston discuss the future of Walt Disney Animation Studios and also pitch a super-weird crossover idea by clicking play on the video below.

The next moves made by Walt Disney Animation Studios are going to be heavily scrutinized by fans and critics alike, and it should go without saying that our curiosity is piqued. Well continue to follow developments here at CinemaBlend, and in the meantime you can enjoy the latest hit from the filmmaking giant.

As mentioned above, Ralph Breaks The Internet, starring John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, and Taraji P. Henson, is now available for digital purchase. And for those of you waiting for physical copies, the film will be available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD.

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge Features A Ship From Colin Trevorrows Episode IX

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge Features A Ship From Colin Trevorrows Episode IX

Youll recall that before J.J. Abrams returned to the Star Wars franchise to direct The Rise of Skywalker, what was then simply known as Episode IX was going to be helmed by Jurassic Worlds Colin Trevorrow. Due to creative differences with Lucasfilm, Trevorrow departed the final installment of the Skywalker Saga in September 2017, but one element from his version of the Star Wars movie can now be seen at the new Disneyland attraction Star Wars: Galaxys Edge: a ship called the TIE Echelon.

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge is now open to the public at Disneyland (if you have a reservation), but needless to say that it takes a long time for that large of an attraction to be constructed. By the time Colin Trevorrow departed Star Wars: Episode IX, Galaxys Edge was nearly a year and a half into the construction process, and even though well never see Trevorrows Episode IX, the TIE Echelon was kept as one of several life-sized ships on display.

As for what specific use the TIE Echelon had during combat, heres what Colin Trevorrow revealed:

It was part of an upgraded First Order fleet. An armed troop transportthe equivalent of a Blackhawk stealth helicopter. We wanted it to evoke memories of earlier ships while still being its own thing. If you look at the elements, its kind of a hybrid of designs from VII and VIII, with some familiar elements from OT Tie Fighters like Vaders Advanced x1. Theres a lot of history in it.

If theres one thing you can count on from The Empire and The First Order, its a lot of variations on the TIE Fighter. Assuming Colin Trevorrows Episode IX also took place a year after The Last Jedi like The Rise of Skywalker does, that would presumably give The First Order enough time to get numerous TIE Echelons into the fight against the Resistance, which has now resorted to guerrilla tactics against the Kylo Ren-led tyrannic force.

Alas, it doesnt sound like the TIE Echelon will appear in J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but because the ship is on display in Galaxys Edge, perhaps thats enough incentive to feature it in a Star Wars TV series, video game or novel down the line. At least The Rise of Skywalker wont be lacking in special TIE starfighters, as the teaser trailer shows Rey leaping over one, which is almost certainly being piloted by Kylo Ren.

Colin Trevorrow also said the following during his interview with Collider about his involvement with Star Wars: Galaxys Edge and the behind-the-scenes story on creating the TIE Echelon:

It was just a natural part of the process. The Imagineering team asked us to develop a new ship for the park while we were designing the film. I took it pretty seriouslyits not every day you get to be a part of something like that. They let me see what they were working on, so I got to see what Galaxys Edge was going to be. I think what theyve created is incredible. Its such an immersive experience.

The director didnt elaborate on provide any details on the sequence where the TIE Echelon would have shown up in Episode IX, but he still loves that ship. As for the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that is being released for the masses, specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, but itll result in the ancient conflict between the Jedi and Sith reaching its climax.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, and those without a reservation can check out Star Wars: Galaxys Edge starting June 24.

However, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge-- Disney's theme park based on the galaxy far, far away -- contains a ship Trevorrow designed for his film. In an interview with Collider, Trevorrow explained he was asked to design a ship for the park while working on the film. This resulted in the Tie Echelon.

But a small part of his Episode IX vision is canon. Any self-proclaimed Star Wars nerd would recognize most of the ships at Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland — an X-wing, the Millennium Falcon, etc
