The Millennium Falcon Might Not Be As New As We Thought In Solo: A Star Wars Story

There are few spaceships from pop culture that have become more well-known and beloved than the Millennium Falcon. Han Solo's prized ship has flown from one side of the galaxy to the other, and it has seen all sorts of action. That said, we will see an entirely new side of the ship in the hands of Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Falcon looks totally new in Solo, but according to Lucasfilm Story Group guru Pablo Hidalgo, that is meant to reflect Lando's personality. Addressing the brief Millennium Falcon cameo from Revenge of the Sith, Hidalgo took to social media and said:

Turns out the fact that the Millennium Falcon looks so new and pristine in Solo: A Star Wars Story is not necessarily a reflection of its actual age. During the events of the upcoming prequel film, the ship will be in the possession of Lando Calrissian, who is a far more image-conscious smuggler than Han Solo. Lando has customized the ship to his liking, and part of that seems to include a tidy and neat appearance. Then, once the ship falls into Han's hands, the vessel will likely fall into disrepair and become the ship seen during the events of the original trilogy.

This tweet from Pablo Hidalgo comes in response to a fan question about the continuity of the Star Wars franchise timeline, and how the Millennium Falcon fits into it. The Corellian freighter looks brand-new during the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but attentive fans already know that it appears in a brief shot in Revenge of the Sith during a scene on Coruscant -- which takes place when Han and Lando were children.

The key here is to note that we do not necessarily know the exact age of the Millennium Falcon, other than the fact that it is incredibly old. Its highly customizable nature allows it to embody the personality of whoever owns it at any given time, so its time in Lando's hands will merely make it look newer.

Audiences will get a chance to see Lando Calrissian's high-modified and customized version of the Millennium Falcon next month when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on May 25. Beyond that, you can catch Han's older version of the ship when J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX debuts in theaters next year on December 20, 2019.

Benedict Cumberbatch Doesn't Know Anything About Doctor Strange 2

The Marvel sequel machine is always churning, but Marvel Studios is being especially secretive about what lies ahead for the MCU. While a few select films have been revealed, nothing else has been confirmed following the untitled Avengers 4. While fans are obviously not privy to this sort of information, it looks like Marvel isn't clueing its actors in either. For example, Benedict Cumberbatch hasn't heard much about what lies in store for Doctor Strange and if the Master of the Mystic Arts is getting a sequel. When he asked if he knew of plans to get Doctor Strange 2 started, here's what Cumberbatch had to say:

Not at the moment, no. The masterplan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate.

Doctor Strange first made his MCU debut in his own solo film in 2016, and then, following a quick cameo in Thor: Ragnarok, it was right off to team up with the rest of the heroes in Avengers: Infinity War. While Doctor Strange is has been keeping himself busy, there has been no official confirmation from Marvel that a sequel to the hit film is underway. There are a few logistical reasons for why Marvel can't really announce a sequel at the moment, but not even Cumberbatch is totally sure what lies for Strange post-Phase 3.

Marvel is always keeping its cards close to its chest, and it isn't about to let any pesky actor spill the beans. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Benedict Cumberbatch was asked if he had any idea when they might be shooting Doctor Strange 2. Cumberbatch wasn't able to give a very helpful answer, as the master plan is "continually in flux." Marvel is constantly tinkering with its release schedule and coming up with new ideas, and Cumberbatch doesn't want to jump the gun and confirm a movie that isn't ready to be announced yet.

I don't think there's any doubt that there will be a Doctor Strange 2. The first movie made over $600 million worldwide, and for a solo movie that isn't Black Panther, that's pretty par the course. Marvel can't really announce Strange's sequel when the character is currently appearing in a movie that's being billed as the culmination of everything, in which anyone can die. Spider-Man sequels are one thing, but they have to maintain some sense of secrecy. Strange is one of the newest characters of the MCU and he's almost certainly going to get a major push as older characters are on their way out. Plus, Cumberbatch could just be straight up lying.

With all that taken into account, it's easy to see why Cumberbatch is avoiding saying anything definitive. Then there's this: "So there's nothing to say, either contractually or otherwise, that [Doctor Strange is] coming back again," he said. Turns Out The Emperor's Laugh In The Rise Of Skywalker Trailer Was Old Footage

Last week, fans were finally treated to the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX at the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, and were clued into some exciting news the return of Emperor Palpatine to the franchise. At the end of the teaser for the over-40-year saga's final film, titled The Rise of Skywalker, an iconic maniacal laugh flooded the convention room floor. Right after that, Darth Sidious himself, Ian McDiarmid, took the stage to confirm his involvement and say "roll it again" to the uproarious fans at the event and watching at home.

But apparently Emperor Palpatines grand re-entrance to Star Wars was not an exclusive bit he helped bring to life for the new trailer (and movie?). Check out what Ian McDiarmid recently said:

That particular laugh was not specially recorded. They found it somewhere, probably from one of the old movies or in a digital vault, or maybe Georges iPhone, I dont know.

I dont know about you, but this bit of information is conflicting to me. If Palpatine is in the movie, why would they dig up an old laugh track of the actors voice from George Lucas' movies? Was the inclusion of the moment purely to inject that nostalgia in our veins wait, will Ian McDiarmid even be in Rise of Skywalker at all?

Once I give this a bit more thought, my guess is: Yes, Emperor Palpatine will be back. (How can he not after that teaser reveal?) But maybe the inclusion of that specific laugh was just a means of getting the fans to identify the characters return. The recycled laugh could still be a component of the movie, or maybe Palpatine isnt quite as chipper in the upcoming Star Wars installment. In fact we dont even know if hell actually be alive or not in the film.

Empire Magazine writer James Dyer, who was at SWCC, did take to Twitter to seemingly confirm that Ian McDiarmid was physically on the set of Rise of Skywalker. He confirmed the return via an interview with director J.J. Abrams, per this post:

During Ian McDiarmids interview at the Star Wars Celebration Chicago, the actor discussed why he particularly loved the trailer he got to be part of revealing:

What I liked about it, though, thats why I think it is a real tease. I mean, the new title The Rise of Skywalker is wonderful, and then from the past, maybe from Hell a laughter comes, which sort of implies 'yeah right.' So in other words, Skywalkers rising? I dont think so.

Of course, Ian McDiarmid cant say anything about his role in the trailer and movie and has to play a little dumb during an interview such as this one. He does perhaps reiterate how the heroes in the new film may have to face Palpatine and of course The Dark Side. Since Snoke was killed off in The Last Jedi, and Kylo Ren has been struggling with his place as either a hero with a redemption story or the new trilogys main villain, it makes sense for Palpatines comeback to take place in a big way. Although the Star Wars actor is playing a villain with a quote like this one:

The headline of that whole panel and the trailer is the word 'tease.' So dont take it too seriously - in fact, have a laugh about it.

How dare you tell us to laugh, Ian McDiarmid! Star Wars is serious business and not at all for our entertainment!
