Why Hailee Steinfeld Would Love To Make A Bumblebee Sequel

Rather than pick up where Transformers: The Last Knight left off, the latest entry of the Transformers film series, Bumblebee, looked back to 1987 to show the eponymous protagonist forming an especially close bond with Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie Watson. Like John Cena, who played Sector 7 agent Jack Burns, Steinfeld is game for Bumblebee getting a sequel, and the actress told CinemaBlend's own Dirk Libbey that wants this to happen mainly because she feels there's a lot more that can be done with Charlie. Steinfeld explained:

I think she's still capable of so much and we see that throughout the course of this film and we see how much growth takes place in such a short period of time that by the end of the film, you know, even though she's overcome so much, uh, I still feel she's got so much to say, a lot more to learn and a long way to go. So I would be interested in exploring that.

We won't go into spoilers for those who haven't seen Bumblebee yet, but as indicated by Hailee Steinfeld's comments, the movie ends with the proverbial door open to explore more of Charlie Watson's life on screen. Her first adventure with Bumblebee commemorated her transition into adulthood, but who's to say that has to be her last encounter with robots in disguise? Travis Knight already has some ideas for a Bumblebee sequel, so perhaps he'll be able to fulfill Steinfeld's wishes if the project gets the green light and he sits back in the director's chair.

Of course, it's important to remember that Bumblebee is a prequel to the previous Transformers movies, not a full-on reboot. There's a two decade gap between Charlie Watson's adventure with Bumblebee and when Sam Witwicky met the yellow Autobot for the first time. If Steinfeld were to reprise Charlie in Bumblebee 2, it would have to take place in the immediate years after its predecessor, i.e. the tail end of the '80s or the beginning of the '90s, since in the present day, Charlie would be in her late 40s to early 50s, depending on when the next main Transformers movie comes out.

As far as critical reception goes, Bumblebee has established itself as the best of the Transformers movies, as it's been met with numerous positive reviews and ranks at 93% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Commercially, on the other hand, Bumblebee has had a rough time, making only $192 million worldwide off a $135 million. To be fair, it had some major competition the week it opened in the form of Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns, and it also showed on fewer screens.

Critical acclaim is nice, but a blockbuster like Bumblebee also needs to be profitable, and so far it's not making many waves in that area. We'll just have to wait and see if Paramount Pictures is keen on keeping the Bumblebee train going, but at least Hailee Steinfeld is enthusiastic about exploring more of Charlie Watson's life rather than keeping this a one-and-done affair.

Bird Boxs Director Explains That Surprising Ending

Warning: Blindfold yourself if you don't want spoilers from Bird Box the film and the book.

Bird Box bookended its story by closing with the return of a supporting character from the beginning. When the mysterious creature attacks first started happening, Sandra Bullock's very pregnant Malorie was just leaving the doctor's office with her sister Jessica (Sarah Paulson). The doctor treating Malorie was Dr. Lapham, played by Parminder Nagra (E.R., The Blacklist, S.H.I.E.L.D.). At the end of the film -- five years later -- Malorie ran into Dr. Lapham again at the school for the blind that served as a sanctuary for survivors.

Bird Box director Susanne Bier explained why Dr. Lapham made that surprise return to the story:

I felt that it needed some real hope. And I thought having someone else survive, and having someone who she met at a point where she was in a kind of rejecting life, and having to meet at that point [where she's embracing it] --- I felt was a really warm and hopeful element to the ending. And it also makes us think, 'Oh, there are other survivors!' I think it does infuse the ending with a kind of grander hope than if she had not been there.

It also kind of makes me wish Malorie had just stuck with Dr. Lapham. They were together on the same day this all started, and who knows how much Malorie's life would've been different if she'd followed Dr. L's path. Then again, we don't know when the doc got to the sanctuary, or how tough her own journey was. And if Malorie took that shortcut, 1) the movie wouldn't be long or dramatic enough, 2) she would've never had Girl in her life, and 3) she never would've gotten to meet Tom (Trevante Rhodes) or named Boy after him.

And, as Susanne Bier told People, it does bring Malorie's story full circle to go from Dr. Lapham seeing Malorie has a pregnant cynic to Dr. Lapham seeing Malorie has a hopeful mother.

The ending does partly match the ending of Josh Malerman's 2014 Bird Box novel. Malorie and the kids end up at Rick's sanctuary. He's said to be one of 108 people in a refuge with no windows. The film is slightly different, and adds the Dr. Lapham angle to bring Malorie that familiarity and tie her arc together.

Bird Box ends on a hopeful note, but they are still living in a world with these unseen monsters around. How will they have enough food to feed everyone? Do they have to stay there forever? Is there a reason why the monsters showed up, or a cure to make them go away?

There are also the insane people who keep trying to force survivors to take off their blindfolds and see the creatures. Blind survivors can't see the creatures, of course, but Malorie and the kids were just blindfolded, so they may still be faced with that danger if they ever leave the sanctuary.

So there may be ideas to tackle if there's a sequel. Since Netflix said Bird Box set a new record for 7-day viewing -- and the film took the internet by storm with memes, to the point that Netflix had to step in to advise caution -- you have to imagine a sequel might be coming.

People asked Susanne Bier about that, and she deflected, saying they only just finished this film and they want to enjoy it for now. But don't be surprised if that surprise ending leads to a new beginning for this story -- with or without Sandra Bullock's Malorie as the lead character.

Are People Mad About Kevin Hart Quitting The Oscars?

Oscar season may be well underway, but the search for a host for the Oscars this year is now still on the Academy's to do list after Kevin Hart recently stepped down. Interestingly enough, a new survey indicates that people are rather indifferent overall about the Hollywood debacle.

The comedian was named host on Dec. 4, but he later decided to pass as the host of the upcoming 91st Academy Awards after some tweets from his past resurfaced, which included homophobic slurs. He claimed that the Academy gave him an ultimatum to apologize or be fired from the honor. Since he felt he'd already addressed his past missteps and didn't want the situation to distract from the show, Kevin Hart quit as host.

Per a survey conducted by Morning Consult/The Hollywood Reporter, the public isn't swayed strongly to one side or the other on if Kevin Hart ultimately made the right decision to hand away becoming host at the Oscars this year. 44% said he made the right decision, 26% said it was the wrong one and 30% don't know or don't care about the issue.

These results skew slightly in Kevin Hart's favor, but more so show ambivalence toward the Oscars controversy that blew up the internet last week. When asked if the Academy was in line to pressure the comedian to apologize, 36% said yes and 34% said no, creating almost an even divide among those surveyed.

It should be noted that only 15% of the public said they have heard a lot about the Kevin Hart/Oscars news, so many didn't have too much to weigh in on. When asked if their decision has changed about Kevin Hart following the homophobic tweets, 41% said no and 29% said yes. Conversely, 26% are soured by the Academy for the pressure they put on Hart.

The reason the public isn't going straight to antagonizing Kevin Hart for the inappropriate tweets of his past is multifaceted. To start, they are from his past, and the actor/comedian made this clear that it doesn't reflect his opinions now. Hart maintains he's evolved since, and is in a different place in life.

The question of whether old social media posts are reflective of their authors was also collected by the recent survey, to which 56% agreed and 44% said it does change their opinion regardless of time. It's certainly a relevant trend to talk about as old tweets from James Gunn cost the job of the Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director. In Kevin Hart's case, it looks like he was given leeway to still host if he apologized, but he decided to not let the "internet trolls" win this one.

The Academy is now tasked with coming up with another host for this year's award show on February 24. The past few years have showed that the Academy Awards are losing their relevance as last year 19% fewer viewers tuned in and the Academy proposed a new controversial category for "Popular Films" over the summer, only to be shot down by the film community and thus postponed. This makes the host quite an important decision for the Academy to make if they want to improve their numbers this time around.
