What Marvels War Machine Movie Would Have Been About, According To Don Cheadle

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a massive franchise. Marvel Studios revolutionized serialized storytelling, and introduced a massive pool of iconic characters. Avengers: Endgame will mark the 22nd installment in the property, but there are a few movies that never came to fruition over the last decade of filmmaking. No, I'm not talking about the ill-fated Inhumans flick, but a War Machine movie starring Don Cheadle.

Joe Robert Cole wrote the screenplay for Black Panther, but was originally tasked with penning an Iron Man spinoff for War Machine. Ultimately it got scrapped, but now we've got an idea regarding what the movie could have been. Don Cheadle himself recently opened up about the possible blockbuster, saying:

There was definitely going to be a lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world. I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit, but I dont know if he would have been a straight fugitive, or if he would have become decommissioned. But there was definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.

Does anyone else have some serious FOMO right now? Because the War Machine movie sounds like an interesting an unique blockbuster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Furthermore, it seems to tease the conflict that would eventually split the heroes in Captain America: Civil War. Do superheroes have the ability to work outside the law?

Don Cheadle's comments to EW are sure to illicit a mix of emotions from fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On one hand, it's exciting to get a glimpse into the development process of Marvel Studios, and see how things are constantly in motion. But considering how cool Cheadle's description of the doomed project is, there are no doubt cinephiles who are bummed War Machine's spinoff never happened.

War Machine has had an interesting tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, serving as a recurring supporting character alongside others like Black Widow and Falcon. Rhodes actually debuted back in 2007 with Iron Man, played by Terrence Howard. Howard ultimately dropped out after having fiscal differences with the studio, and Cheadler replaced him in Iron Man 2, which was also the movie where Rhodey became War Machine for the very first time.

According to earlier reports, this was when a War Machine was tossed around at the studio. Joe Robert Cole explained this process over a year ago, stating Iron Man 3 as the reason why the movie never got the green lit. As he told it:

At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie. I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren't going to do War Machine anymore.

Talk about a bummer. While fans would no doubt have loved to see War Machine take the spotlight in his own solo movie, he never really got the chance. Instead, he'd reprise his role in Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, as well as the Avengers movies.

War Machine ultimately survived Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War, and he'll presumably have a meaty role with the rest of the survivors in Endgame.

Epic Creed II Poster Puts Two Generations Of Boxers Head To Head

Creed II is both a sequel in a brand new franchise and the eighth film in the larger story of Rocky Balboa. These two worlds will collide in the film, but first, they collide in a new poster, that puts both generations face-to-face. Check it out.

On one side we have Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, with Sylvester Stallone's Rocky by his side. Across from Rocky is Dolph Lundgren who is returning to the role which made him a star in Rocky IV, Ivan Drago. Next to Lundgren is Florian Munteanu, a Romanian boxer who is appearing in only his second film as Ivan Drago's son Victor.

Creed II will continue the story of the original Creed that sees Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo from the Rocky films, follow in his father's footsteps and become a championship level boxer. Apollo was famously killed in the ring at the hands of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. While that part of the story is discussed in the original Creed, it will be a key plot element in the sequel, as the son of Ivan Drago will challenge to the son of Apollo for a boxing match of their own.

Of course, every villain is the hero of their own story, and while we might look at Victor and Ivan Drago as the bad guys, it doesn't appear they see things that way. Dolph Lundgren has spoken about the fact that his character's life basically fell apart following the loss to Rocky, so while Adonis Creed may feel like he has something he needs to prove, he's not the only one. We know from the trailers that Victor Drago is the one that issues the challenge to Adonis, which indicates that Drago feels he has some unfinished business as well, with the protege of the man who defeated his father.

If you're not hyped up for Creed II quite yet, then this poster may be the thing that does it. Everybody here looks ready to start throwing punches, but if we want to actually see it, we'll have to buy a ticket and see the movie. Not that I expect Ivan and Rocky to start going at it. Both actors are still in really good shape for their age, but that's probably not a fight we want to see. I'm sure the war of words will be enough.

Creed II has a tough act to follow as the previous film was one of the best entries in the entire Rocky franchise. Ryan Coogler has given up the director's chair in favor of Steven Caple Jr. who will direct a screenplay co-written by Sylvester Stallone. The first Creed earned Stallone an Oscar nomination for his performance. Whether the sequel will live up to that standard remains to be seen.

Creed II hits theaters this Thanksgiving.

Disney Is Facing Backlash Over Gay Jungle Cruise Character

Production is currently underway on Disney's Jungle Cruise, the latest of its theme park attractions to be turned into a feature-length movie. Jungle Cruise stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, and while plot details for the movie remain slim, a report indicated that the movie would feature an openly gay character to be played by Jack Whitehall. If true, it's a significant move for Disney, but the report has gotten backlash due to Whitehall's character being described as "camp" and "effete," in addition to the role being played by a straight man.

In the original report from The Sun, the publication claimed that Jack Whitehall would be playing an openly gay character, which the unnamed source described as "hugely effete, very camp, and very funny." The news has not been confirmed by Disney, but the report is getting backlash from moviegoers upset with the characters description. Part of the complaint is that the character is described with stereotypical traits for a homosexual. Comedian James Barr summed up his thoughts on social media, writing that it's frustrating when straight actors are cast for these parts, while gay actors have a harder time securing roles as heterosexual characters.

Additionally, people are upset that a straight actor was cast as a gay character in what would a significant moment in LGBT history. The role would be Disney's first openly gay character in a blockbuster, and some feel that a gay actor should play it.

This situation might give people flashbacks the live action Beauty and the Beast when Disney marketed the Le Fou character as its first gay character. While Le Fou was gay, he was not open during the majority of the movie, and it really only became clear in the final seconds of the film, not living up to the expectations that the studio itself had set. This too received backlash from the LGBT community, and it is unclear how Jungle Cruise will be affected going forward.

It's clear that this is an important issue for many people and we will have to wait until more details about Jungle Cruise are revealed. The movie is currently still filming and stars Dwayne Johnson as a ship captain who takes a sister and brother (Emily Blunt and Jack Whitehall) on a journey through the jungle to find a magical tree with healing powers. Jungle Cruise is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide October 11, 2019.
